Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should we lodge our Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)?

Your NOIM must be lodged at least one calendar month before your wedding date. You can lodge it up to 18 months in advance, and earlier is usually better.

What documents do we need to provide?

You'll need proof of date and place of birth, photo identification, and if previously married, divorce papers or a death certificate. Documents not in English must be translated.

What is a paperwork-only marriage ceremony?

A paperwork-only marriage ceremony is a short legal marriage focused on the required wording, signatures, and documents, without the extra ceremony elements of a traditional wedding.

Is this the same as a registry wedding in Newcastle?

It delivers the same legal outcome, but the experience is different. A registry-style marriage through us is local, flexible, and celebrant-led rather than a government Registry appointment.

Can we have a courthouse wedding in Newcastle?

Most people using that phrase are really looking for a simple legal marriage. In Newcastle, the practical options are a Registry wedding or a celebrant-led paperwork-only marriage.

What are your current fees?

Our current pricing is listed on the pricing page. The simple marriage service starts at $700, with optional witness, certificate, after-hours, and travel costs clearly listed.

Do we need to arrange witnesses?

Yes. Australian law requires two witnesses aged 18 or over. If needed, we can help organise witness support.

Can we marry on the same day we lodge our NOIM?

No. Australian marriage law requires a one-month waiting period from NOIM lodgement unless you obtain a shortening of time from a prescribed authority.

Must we sign the NOIM together?

No. You can sign separately with different witnesses at different times. Once one party's signature has been properly witnessed and received, the notice period can begin.

Where can we hold our simple marriage service?

We can conduct the service at our office, your home, a cafe, a park, a venue, or another suitable location in Newcastle and the Hunter region.

When do we receive our marriage certificate?

You'll receive a ceremonial certificate on the day. The official marriage certificate is ordered separately through NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages after registration.

How long does a paperwork-only marriage ceremony take?

Most paperwork-only ceremonies take about five to 10 minutes once everyone is present and ready to sign.
